Hanuman ghat is whereVallabha, the devotionalteacher of the Krishna Bhakticult, lived during the 15thcentury. Tulsi Das built a Hanuman temple here whichgives the ghat its name. Then come to Harishchandra,a burning ghat on theriverfront named after thelegendary king who chosehonesty above everythingand was reduced to workingas a lowly dom, or scavenger,at the cremation ground.People in this part of the citybelieve that this is the oldest cremation ground in Varanasi,surpassing even MANIKARNIKAGHAT in its sanctity.Going past Bhelupura on the Sonarpura Road is the narrowKedar Gali leading to KedarGhat. The ancient temple of Kedareshwara is especiallyrevered by pilgrims fromsouth India. The temple is also the supposed site of the legendary jyotirlinga.
