Kukke Subramanya Ashlesha Bali Pooja: Details and Booking Guide
Ashlesha Bali Pooja is one of the main sarpa dosha remedies performed at Kukke Subramanya Temple in Karnataka. If you are planning to perform this pooja, here are the accurate details on booking, cost, dates, and procedure.
What Is Ashlesha Bali Pooja
Ashlesha Bali is a Vedic ritual performed to please the Naga Devatas (serpent deities). It is done to remove the effects of Sarpa Dosha, Kuja Dosha, and Kaal Sarpa Dosha from a person's horoscope. At Kukke Subramanya, Lord Subramanya is worshipped as the protector of serpents, which is why this temple is considered one of the most powerful places to perform this pooja.

- People born in Ashlesha Nakshatra (also called Ayilyam)
- Persons with Kaal Sarpa Dosha in their birth chart
- Persons with Naga Dosha or Sarpa Dosha
- Persons carrying Kuja Dosha (Mangal Dosha)
- Couples facing delays in conception
- Individuals with unexplained skin diseases
- Families experiencing repeated marriage delays
You do not need to be born under Ashlesha Nakshatra to perform this pooja.
Ashlesha Bali Pooja Booking: Online and Offline
Ashlesha Bali Pooja can be booked both online and at the temple counter.
- Online booking: Book through the official Karnataka Government ITMS portal at itms.kar.nic.in. Go to E-Services, search for Kukke Shree Subramanya Temple, and select Ashlesha Bali Pooja to choose your date and slot.
- Offline (counter) booking: Tickets are also issued at the temple counter on the day of the pooja. This offline option is heavily used and is First come serve, since many devotees prefer to confirm their date after reaching Kukke or after checking the Ashlesha Nakshatra timing locally.
Both routes are valid. If you want a confirmed slot in advance, book online. If you are flexible with your travel dates, the counter option works well too, but reach early since demand is high on Ashlesha Nakshatra days.

How the Pooja Unfolds Step by Step
Step 1: Holy Dip at Kumaradhara River
Before the pooja, devotees take a ritual bath at the Kumaradhara River, located 2 km from the main temple. Auto-rickshaws are available at the temple for roughly ₹50–₹100 per ride. Also, the river is believed to cure skin diseases caused by sarpa dosha, which is why many devotees spend extra time there.
Step 2: Pradakshinam at Aadi Subramanya Temple
After the bath, walk to the Aadi Subramanya Swamy Temple, which lies five minutes from the main temple on the left side of the main road. Next, perform six pradakshinams (circumambulations) around this smaller shrine. This step is traditionally considered the purification phase.
Step 3: Purchase Ticket at the Counter
The Ashlesha Bali ticket counter is located at the main temple entrance on the right side. Pay ₹400, get your receipt, and keep it safe. Specifically, the receipt must be shown again during prasadam distribution - do not lose it.
Step 4: Sankalpa in the Sankalpa Mandapam
With ticket in hand, proceed to the Sankalpa Mandapam inside the temple. The priest performs a brief sankalpa ritual announcing your gothra, rasi, and nakshatra to formally dedicate the pooja in your name. This takes around 10 minutes. Furthermore, carry a paper with your birth star details written clearly, because noise in the mandapam makes verbal communication hard.
Step 5: Enter the Ashlesha Bali Mandapam
The Ashlesha Bali mandapam entrance is right next to the Sankalpa mandapam. After entering, wait for 20–30 minutes while the priest gathers all devotees for the batch. Meanwhile, a serpent-shaped rangoli is drawn in the centre of the mandapam - this is the focal point of the ritual.
Step 6: The Pooja Itself
The priest chants Sarpa Sooktha mantras while devotees make food offerings (bali) onto the rangoli. The ritual runs for roughly 30 minutes. Additionally, the purnahuti (final offering) marks completion, and prasadam is distributed only after purnahuti is over.
Step 7: Collect Prasadam
Show your ticket receipt and collect the prasadam cover. Inside, you will find one full coconut, one half coconut, and dhoop sticks. Do not share this prasadam with anyone outside your family.
Dress Code (Mandatory)
For Men :
- White dhoti or panchey (mandatory)
- Kurta or upper cloth (no shirt, no vest, no t-shirt)
- Bare chest with angavastram is traditionally preferred
- Jeans, trousers, and shorts are strictly prohibited
For Women
- Saree with pallu (most preferred)
- Salwar kameez with dupatta covering the chest
- Traditional half-saree acceptable
- Jeans, t-shirts, skirts, and tight clothing strictly prohibited
The dress code does not apply to small children below 10 years. However, teenagers are expected to follow adult norms.
Post-Pooja Rules
Fasting Rules
Fast from the morning until the pooja is complete. Only water, milk, or fruits are permitted before the ritual. Afterwards, you can eat a full meal — but without onion, garlic, or non-vegetarian food for the rest of the day.
What to Do With the Prasadam Coconuts
Take the coconuts home. Subsequently, prepare a sweet dish (traditionally coconut burfi or obbattu) using these coconuts. Only after your family eats this home-made prasadam can you resume consuming onion and garlic. Additionally, if you must eat outside food before reaching home, carry a small piece of the coconut and consume it first as a ritual marker.

- Cash Needed: Keep exact cash ready ₹400, or larger bills (₹500/₹1000) if you need change.
- Important Details: Jot down or print your Gothra, Rasi, and Nakshatra beforehand so you have them on hand.
- Mobiles: Phones aren't allowed inside the sanctum, so stash them in the lockers outside before entering.
- Fasting: Have a light dinner the night before and skip breakfast in the morning until the rituals are done.
- Prasadam: Bring along a cloth bag to carry the coconut prasadam safely on your journey home.
- Transit Tip: If you're coming from Bangalore, take the overnight KSRTC bus, it gets you to Kukke around 5:30 AM, which aligns perfectly with the first slot.
