What does the moon represent in Hindu mythology?
The beautiful bright moon also referred to as ‘Soma’ is found among the major gods. Like Agni, Indra, Sun, and other gods, the Mantra to praise Soma are mentioned in Vedas.
The Maarkandeya Purana makes Chandra be the son of the sage Atri and his wife Anasuya, by the divine grace of Brahma. According to this story, the power of Brahma entered Atri and was born as Chandra to his wife. The moon has also been talked about in Skanda Purana. Chandra is said to have emerged from the sea of milk when it was churned by both the Asuras and Devas. Due to his brilliant form, he was given the status of a planet, one of the Navagrahas. He is considered one of the Devas. When there was an outcry about the poison, Lord Shiva himself drank it, due to which his throat turned blue. The moon started residing on his head to cool Shiva.
Why is the moon important in Vedic astrology?
Moon is the second planet after the Sun in the order of the planets. In Vedic astrology, it is the significator of mind, mother, mental state, morale, material things, travel, happiness, peace of mind, blood, left eye chest, etc. It is the Lord of Cancer sign, Rohini, Hasta and Shravan Nakshatra.
