Buddha Purnima: Celebrating The Full Moon Day
The festival of “Buddha Purnima,” also called Vesak or Buddha Day, is informally called “Buddha’s birthday.”
It is a holiday to commemorate the birth, enlightenment (Nirvāṇa), and death (Parinirvāṇa) of Gautama Buddha.
It is celebrated by Buddhists across the country with prayers and gatherings at temples.
When is Buddha Purnima celebrated?
The date of Buddha Purnima is different every year, as it is celebrated on the first full moon of the Vishak, which is observed in May or early June. In 2021 it takes place on May 26.
How is Vesak celebrated?
Each Buddhist culture – mainly in India, Thailand, and North and South Korea – has its traditions to this day. It usually includes chanting mantras, meditating, reflecting on Buddhist teachings, and making offerings to temples. The houses are decorated with lanterns, and people wear special white robes and participate in processions.
On this day, too, many pour water on Buddha’s shoulders, in the so-called Buddha bath, to remind people to clear their minds of thoughts of attachment, anger, and fear.
People who follow Buddhism in India celebrate the day by visiting Viharas by wearing a clean white dress. Non-vegetarian food is usually avoided on this day. Consumption of kheer is said to be a part of the rituals and is distributed among devotees and needy people on this day.
In New Delhi, the mortal remains of Buddha are put out on display for the public, and followers assemble to offer their prayers.
This festival is a huge occasion for the Buddhist followers, and they light up their houses, candles, and Buddha temples get crowded with devotees as large fairs were held till 2019, but as the pandemic hit the world, everything changed. Keeping all things in mind, it is advised to celebrate Buddha Purnima at home only.
His message for a better life
The whole world knows about the rich Indian culture and the great values and teachings that lead to the betterment of the world and humanity.
One should always remember the Buddha’s Lessons that says “Atma Dipo Bhava” — every man can see the light inside him and act as God for himself through his efforts — and choose to change the approach.
Conclusion
Keeping all his teachings in mind while humanity is suffering from the deadly virus and standing together as all nations are dealing with this situation. By standing in one Sutra and with Buddha’s blessing, we would surely get over this problem and celebrate festivals like before.
