Importance of Sravan Month and Suggested Pujas
In the Hindu calendar, the month of July-August is popularly known as Shravan Maas or Sravan. The beginning month of Hindu is Chaitra, dedicated to Shiv Ji and Sravan is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar dedicated to Shiv Ji. Sravan is one of the holiest and blessed months for Hindus.
According to old Hindu traditions, it is believed that praying to Shiv Ji during the Sravan month is 108 times more effective and powerful than praying at any other time in the year.
Importance of Shravan Month
Devotees worldwide observe fasts and offer prayers to Shiv Ji in this holy month of Sravan. During this time, Shiv Ji drank the venomous halahala that emanated from Samudra Manthan. The Samudra Manthan happened between the Devas and Asuras to attain the Nectar or Amrit. During the Manthan, the ocean gave many valuables such as conch, the Moon, gemstones, Goddesses, etc., which were divided among the Devas and Asuras.
However, the ocean also gave the deadliest poison called Halahala, which could have destroyed the whole universe. At this time, Shiv Ji came forward and decided to drink every inch of Halahala to save the world. Parvati, his wife, held Shiv Ji’s throat so that Halahala could not go down, resulting in his throat turning blue. Due to the blue throat, Shiv Ji is also known as Neelkanth.
